Emerson College is a college that gives people interested in the communicative arts the chance to make a difference in their chosen fields of study.

There are many colleges and universities in the United States, but Emerson College, a private college in Boston Massachusetts, stands out from amongst them. Their motto is "Bringing Innovation to Communication and the Arts", and that they do, along with so much more.

Emerson College Course Offerings

Emerson College was founded in 1880 by Charles Wesley Emerson. Originally, it was strictly an oratory school. However, over the years it expanded, and according to Emerson's Official Website, now has concentrations in Journalism, Marketing Communication, Organizational/Political Communication, Communication Disorders, Performing Arts, Film / TV / Digital Media Arts, Writing, Literature & Publishing, and Interdisciplinary Studies.

An Exceptional College

What makes Emerson so unique is that it is currently the only college in the United States that is dedicated exclusively to the arts and communication with a liberal arts curriculum. It is also intensive, in that classes can be up to four hours long, and students need to have a major right from the time of matriculation.

Another thing that sets Emerson College apart from other colleges is its reputation. For example, many leaders in the Entertainment industry graduated from Emerson; a favorite alum is Henry Winkler, aka "The Fonz" from the classic television show "Happy Days." Also, Ploughshares, a literary magazine based out of Emerson College, is one of the top literary magazines in the country.

Emerson College has no specific campus; rather, it is referred to as the "campus on the common", because of its close proximity to Boston Common. All of Emerson's buildings, as well as their theatre (the Cutler Majestic Theater) and their radio station (WERS)are located in a small section of Boylston and Tremont Streets.

Indeed, while Emerson has expanded over the years (within the past decade they have unveiled the Tufte Performance and Production Center, as well as the new Piano Row dorm and campus center), the student body remains small. Each incoming class only has about 700 members in it, and as a result, it is quite hard to get into Emerson College.

Those who are interested in taking just a class or two, rather than becoming a matriculated student, can do so through the Continuing Education program. These courses are typically held at night, or during the summer. These courses can be completed via a certificate program as well.

Emerson College has some of the best professors in the country, who are immersed in additional occupations within the concentrations they teach. For an excellent education, as well as a culturally diverse and convenient Boston location, Emerson College, truly is unique.
